Our Beaver Colony became the first in the whole County to be able to spend an entire night in a local Library! The theme was lego, combined with learning about the Library and some book reading of course! Once we have fully recovered we will do a full write up, and add a handy pack to our website for any other Colonies planning a similar event (including contact details etc) - as well as sharing with Colonies across Cambridgeshire. We are hoping to pilot a similar event for Cub Scouts (including the Book Reader badge) in due course and will share that too if it's another success.
For now here's just a brief summary, and a few photos (more to follow in due course) - 18 boys and girls took part.
Event was 6pm Friday to 9.30am Saturday, and everyone slept in the middle of the Library itself. Library staff organised a lego building scout themed challenge and a Treasure Hunt around the Library, as well as teaching us how we could take out books with our library cards (which all the Beaver Scouts then did). Other activities that evening / Saturday morning included making "lego heads", a library quiz, pin the head on the lego man, target lego throwing and of course some time to play with the lego too. There was lots of time to read books, best of all of course when in sleeping bags with our torches at bed time! Snacks on Friday included cookies and cakes, whilst on Saturday morning we had pre-ordered sausages in rolls from a local bakery that we just had to pop and collect.
All those taking part got a lego necker (we bought the material and some of the parents made them into neckers for us) and a lego mini figure blanket badge, plus the library staff gave them all a bookmark, sticker and a lego goodie too! Two lucky Beaver Scouts also earned special prizes of lego sets, well done Luke J and Ted R.
